Creased into a rugged gorge and surrounded by steep granite walls streaked with black and tan, Rainbow Falls is a great destination for those of us who like hiking down. The .5-mile descent to the base of the falls is a drop over jumbled tree roots and around walls of stone, and at two different points you will need to use ropes that are provided. After you linger at the base for a while, you will realize that hiking back up is the only way to get back to your car. The hike is strenuous, but the bottom-up view of this 100-foot waterfall more than makes up for it.
